birdie I have had a computer for 12 years at least, and have learned a lot, Information I would like to pass on to you. I don't know it all, and if you run into someone who says they do.. please do yourself a favor and run the other way. :) I would rather have a tech who takes his time and actually helps my computer then someone who is too fast, and comes up empty handed. There are two links at the top of this with tech sites so if you can't get help here, you can go to them. I would not pay for anything, there are plenty of people or tech sites on the net who are willing to help for free! birdieHow did I get to know a thing or two about windows XP? Well, I invited a tech to my house 12 years ago, who charged me $70 an hour to do nothing! Actually $70 an hour at the time was reasonable, He Was there for an hour and a half, poked around in and out of my computer and at the end of an hour and a half, he said i should format, basically doing nothing! Then he left!:) I thought at the time, I better learn how to do this!! And I did, I leaned everything I could find about windows xp, just the operating system not hard ware.. as I have no interest in that! :) I joined a lot of tech groups, took notes, over and over again.. and finally the light went on. birdie
There is a chatbox at the bottom right of this page (if you are using Firefox) (if you are using IE it will be just below) to explain your problem, or you may email me and i will get back to you as soon as possible. Probably emailing me would get you your answer in the quickest time. I don't guarantee a solution, but I will give it my all, and oh yes, how much does this wonderful service cost? Nothing at all! I love helping others to make their computers run better. If I have managed to help in some small way, please give them the link and send them my way! If I don't know it right off the top of my head I will be happy to search for an answer. Hugs Rainy

Testimonial

Rainy has been very helpful with my computer's problems and I was so happy to be able to count on someone since I'm not very good at this. I love using the computer but I have to say I am not very good at fixing it! This will be a very resourceful place to keep in my favorites! Ln

Wallpaper

Replacing your Desktop Wallpaper in Windows XP

First, find a wallpaper you like and make sure it's the right resolution (size) for your desktop.
  • I have included two wallpaper sites up above, one is mine of coure..and one thumbnail to the right. Just in case you have trouble finding something you like
  • Right click on an empty space on your desktop and choose properties
  • Click on the Settings Tab
  • On bottom left you will find the screen resolution, take note of that!

  • Then...after searching for that special new wallpaper, put it where you will remember it, perhaps in "my pictures".

  • Right click on an empty place on your desktop and choose properties
  • Click on the Desktop Tab
  • Click on the Browse Button over on the right
  • Browse to where you put your wallpaper
  • Click on it, and click open.
  • Then apply and ok

Defragging your hard drive Tips And Tricks for Windows XP
    maintenance

Personally I would not use windows defragger, i would download a free Defragger from the net. Diskeeper Free Edition is much better, there are better out there if you want to pay for them, but this one is more than adequate. The free version only allows you to defrag one hard drive at a time. It's the only limitation I noticed although I am sure there are others, but not important. You can download it below:

    Diskeeper Free Link

it's pretty self explanatory once you install it and open it

  • Open Program
  • right click on drive you want to defrag
  • Choose analyze
  • When alalyze stops, you will to right click and choose defrag

  • If you have more than one drive, you will repeat this for every drive you have!

    Cleaning Unnecessary Files

I recommend Windows Cleanup, it's also free, If you are an incredimail user, it does something to keep incredimail running smoothly, it deletes the run files, so you don't have to worry about it.

    Windows Cleanup Link

  • Open Program

  • Click Cleanup, let it run

  • When it is finished, Click no, you don't want to log off, those few files won't hurt anything, and no you don't want to donate, then x out of it or maybe you do, I did once! :)

  • I also use

    CCleaner Link

    Easy Cleaner Link

They all seem to delete different files, Easy Cleaner and CCleaner also do other things, you might want to read about it on the websites. divider
    Privacy

I also use Internet Explorer 8 to clean unnecessary files and other things like browser history!
  • Open Internet Explorer 8 or 7
  • Go to Tools, Internet Options, General Tab
  • Under Browsing History click delete
  • When "Delete Browsing History" Window comes up, make sure there is a check mark in everything but passwords!
  • However do not allow your browser to remember passwords to online banking sites, or other sites which would keep private information about you.
  • You do not want your browser to remember sensitive information like credit cards, drivers license numbers, and social security numbers. If you buy items on the net, I recommend Paypal.. I trust them explicidly, they have protected me many times.. and I only have to enter sensitive information one time and not all over the net! Actually I avoid entering any of my real information on the net, too many unscrupulous people on the net waiting to do you harm so please protect yourself! Paypal link below

    Paypal Link
    Which brings me to this..

    Your Identity

Do not create an email with your real name, the people who would do you harm, now have one thing you really don't want them to have. Create a screenname, something that is simple for you to remember, and has no real connection to you! If your real name is Johnathan Bauer consider creating an email jb1978@att.net why 1978?, well it might be the year you met your wife, something only you would know! Now you have an anonymous email!

Flush DNS cache in Windows XP

There are three more things that will come in handy so I will explain here..
    divider

    1. Click Run off the start menu

    2. Type cmd and hit ok.

    3. In the command prompt that comes up, enter ipconfig /flushdns where the cursor is flashing

    4. Click Ok
I would do this about once a month

If you happen to get this error
"Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution"
Here are the steps to resolve it!

  • Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  • In the list of services, click DNS Client.
  • Make sure that the Status column displays Started and that the Startup Type column displays Automatic.
  • If the service is not set to Started or if the startup type for the DNS Client service is not set to Automatic, follow these steps:
  • 1. Right-click DNS Client, and then click Properties.
    2. In the DNS Client Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Automatic in the Startup type list.
    3. Click Start, click Apply, and then click OK
    divider
    Replace Necessary Windows Files
  • You can make sure all your windows files are in tact by going to the start menu, and have your windows xp cd ready!
  • Click on run
  • When the run box comes up, type sfc /scannow (remember the space)
  • They will ask you to put your cd in the drive
    1. This command will immediately start the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. What with trojans worms and the like who love to eat windows files, it's handy to know how to replace them! I run this one whenever I find a problem! If my computer is not running quite right!

Can you do this in Vista? Yes, with a little change!

You must open an elevated Command Prompt Window first

How to Open an elevated Command Prompt window

    1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
    2. type sfc /scannow
    3. Then just let it run and only touch the keyboard if input is requested of you. It should take only about 10 or 15 miniutes; If it takes any longer than that, just let it run!

    Repair errors on hard drives

You can help solve some computer problems and improve the performance of your computer by making sure that your hard disk has no errors.
  • click on "My Computer" icon on the desktop

  • Right-click the hard drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.

  • Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  • To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report problems but not fix them.

  • To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

  • To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

  • Click Start. Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take quite a few minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it's checking for errors.

    Note

If you select "Automatically fix file system errors" for a disk that is in use (for example, the partition that contains Windows), you'll be prompted to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer. I do this just before bedtime, because it seems to take an extra amount of time! When I wake up, my desktop is visible and I had to do no waiting. This I do whenever I find a problem that I can't put a finger on.
I do most of my maintenance almost daily, I am on my computer 24/7. but I know this seems excessive, but I am one lady who wants to run a clean mean machine! lol Over doing it, does not hurt, but under doing it does! If you are on your computer say 3 to 5 hours a day, then your maintenance does not have to be done daily. In the tech groups there is a big discussion about how often to defrag. One tech will say every day is fine, while others say it's overkill! It's your choice, it's your computer!

    Necessary Programs

    Avast Link

  • Trojan Fighter

  • Emsisoft Link

  • Unnecessary File Cleaner

  • Windows Cleanup Link
  • Fire Wall

  • Zone Alarm Link
  • superAntiSpyware

  • SuperAntispyware Link
  • Ad Aware

  • Ad Aware Link

It is imperative that you have an Antivirus, a Firewall, File cleaner, Trojan Fighter, and a Spyware detector, I have listed two spyware detectors, and both are good.. Of course programs are your personal choice, I try to use great programs that are free and have been recommended by techs in my tech group.

AVAST is awesome! I used to use AVG and loved it, but one day something got to it, so I was forced to download another antivirus and AVAST was recommended. I felt it was so much better, had features that AVG didn't have. Features, that would make AVAST more secure than AVG like password protecting it for instance. Anyway since I switched, I have been very happy. Now remember No program is perfect, it will allow some vermin to sneak in. If a new virus is created, and the program you are using doesn't have the antivirus then you will not be protected! That doesn't happen too often, but it does happen, that is why I scan daily. and update just before I scan.

Emsisoft is an amazing program, it used to be called Asquared, and I vsn't find fault with it. it has found so many bugs I can't count them.. lots of tracing cookies, lots! And it's free! What more can you ask?

Zone Alarm Please do not use Windows Firewall, Windows Firewall allows traffic from your computer to the net. I don't want programs leaving my computer to tell some advertiser what I have on my hard drive and what I might buy if they send a lot of pop ups of the same type. And I want a program that will ask me "do I want "this program or dll or whatever to gain access either to my computer or to the net!! It's annoying at first, but eventually it settles down and doesn't ask all the time. When it first started asking questions, I didn't know all the answers, and had to research about half of them so I wasn't saying No when I should have said yes. Don't ever guess, do your research, your computer is at stake.

Windows Cleanup It is absolutely imperative that you clean the junk your browser creates, or that you create as you play or surf, if it's not cleaned, your computer will bog down, If you do not clean these files, you will notice your computer running slower and slower, and very sluggish. It's nice that we have free programs that will help us.

    Time Schedule for Maintenance

    1. Run Antivirus, be sure to update it first! DAILY

    2. Cleaning Unnecessary files DAILY

    3. Defragging DAILY or every other day

    4. Flush DNS Cache ONCE A MONTH

    5. Repair Hard Drive Errors (whenever a problem arises)

    6. Replace Windows Files (whenever a problem arises)

If your time on the computer is much less than mine, I would adjust the schedule to suit.. but still would update and scan for virus every single day!

How to create a System Restore Point

    1. Click the Start button,

    2. Select Programs/Accessories/System Tools

    3. Click System Restore

    4. Click Create a restore point

    5. Click Next

    6. Give your restore point a name, it will automatically be given a date

    7. Click Create

    Going Back in Time

If your computer seems to be unstable, you've done a thorough anti-virus anti trojan, and anti-spyware scan, and you've been unable to remove any suspected software packages through Add and Remove, give System Restore a try. To roll back your computer settings to a previously saved restore point:
  • Click the Start button,
  • Select Programs/Accessories/System Tools

  • Click System Restore.

  • Choose "Restore my computer to an earlier time".

  • Click Next

  • Select a day on the calendar, a restore point description, then click Next

  • Your computer will reboot and system restore will begin. unfortunately it's not as wonderful as it seems.. if it works, great! If it doesn't, you are stuck with fixing the problem or repairing your windows Operating System, or even dread the word... FORMAT! but it's an avenue to try!

IT's important to create a restore point every 2 weeks or so.. The system also creates points but I have never been too lucky in getting them to work!

    Blue Screen of Death

Blue screens are typically caused by uncorrected software errors in device drivers: in NT-based Windows systems by poorly-written device drivers, and in the Windows 9x family of operating systems by incompatible DLL driver files or bugs in the software kernel of the operating system.[2] They can also be caused by physical hardware faults, such as faulty RAM memory or power supplies, overheating of components, or hardware which is run beyond its specification limits ("overclocking")

Your computer is usually set to reboot when this occurs, making it difficult to figure out what caused the error

The easiest way to stop this rebooting cycle is to shut it down. To do this follow these steps:
    1. Go to your Start menu and click Start. Then, click Run.
    2. At the run prompt type in sysdm.cpl and then OK
    3. When the System Properties comes up, you will want to go to the Advanced Tab
    4. Under the Startup and Recovery Tab click Settings
    5. Once there, take the check mark out of the box that says Automatic Restart. You will see this in the section that says System Failure
    6. Remember to click OK on each of the windows from this point on until you are finished.
    7. Once this is disabled, if the blue screen shows up again, you'll be able to copy down the information so you can get help with it.

Some common problems that could cause a BSOD

    1. Software or device drivers may have a problem
    2. A hardware device is malfunctioning , or was removed while Windows was running, or does not fully support Windows. On older machines, outdated BIOS information can also cause errors.
    3. Hardware or hard disk errors during installation of Windows.
    4. Corrupted startup files , hardware and driver software during Windows startup can also be the cause. This type of error will always require troubleshooting before Windows can start up normally.
    5. Intermittent errors that appear randomly. These can be caused by:
    6. Overheating processor
      Defective memory system
A dying or dead hard disk
or faulty software and device drivers

The first thing to do is..

Check your device manager to see if you have any exclamation marks or red X's next to your drivers
    1. Go to your desktop
    2. Right click on "My Computer Icon"
    3. Choose Properties
    4. Click on Hardware Tab
    5. click on Device Manager
    6. When device manager opens check to see if there are any exclamation marks or red x's. These would indicate a problem!
Once you see a problem go to the manufacturer of the device and download or update the driver
I had a BSOD about a year ago, several of them, I would boot up and after about 30 minutes or so, my computer would turn off. It turned out to be a faulty fan, which at the time I had no money to buy the fan.. which I thought was kind of expensive $25 so in the meantime I borrowed a small table fan from my son and set it next to my computer which kept the computer cool enough until I had money to buy the fan. Some fixes are simple while others are quite complicated.
Like I said at the beginning I don't have all the answers, there are some expert tech sites on the net, two links at the top, which will give you more precise instructions for the errors that come up in a BSOD. At least I have given you some idea of where to look.:)

    Startup Entries

The more startup programs you have, the slower your computer boots and shuts down. Using MSCONFIG, you can disable the programs you do not want to launch automatically.

  • Click "Start" and click "Run" Type "msconfig" (without quotes) in the "Run" box and press "Enter." to launch the Systems Configuration Utility.
  • Click the "Startup" tab. You should see a list of startup entries.
  • Please Note:
This is vitally important, you cannot arbitrarily take the check marks out of any startup entry you wish, You must search each one before you do this. Yes it is time consumming, but worth it in the end, once you see how much faster your computer boots and shuts down.
This goes without saying, you cannot take the checkmarks out of your antivirus, firewall, or any utility that helps protect your computer. You must search each one to see if it's needed or not. Here is a great site which allows you to put startup entries in their search box!

    Bleeping Computer
  • For instance, I just put AVASTUI in the search box and it came up with a Y to the right of it.. so the following descriptions will help you determine which startup entries should be left alone or the ones that can be removed

  • This description is on the site as well, but a little further down.

  • Each entry in the database will have a Status assigned to it.

  • Y - This status flag means that this entry should be left alone and be allowed to run as if it is unchecked it may break the functionality or use of a particular program.
  • N - This status flag means it is unnecessary to run this program automatically when Windows starts as you can run it manually when necessary.
  • U - This status flag means it is up to you whether or not you feel this program needs to run automatically
  • .
  • X - This status flags means the item should definitely not start up automatically. Items that have this flag are generally malware such as viruses, trojans, hijackers, spyware but could also be programs that are not desirable to run on your computer.
  • ? - This status flag means the status of this entry is unknown at this time and more research is necessary.

  • Once you have searched each one, you can Uncheck the programs you want to remove from the Startup menu Click "Apply." Click "OK" and restart your computer. The programs you remove from the Startup menu will no longer launch when Windows starts again.

  • Then click apply ok

  • A window will appear asking you if you would like to restart now, or exit without restarting If you choose to restart, when you return to your desktop another window appears stating you have used the System Configuration Utility. click the check box to the bottom left that states do not show this to me again!
